![]() ![]() Some will dismiss mental health issues, but gymnastics, in particular, is a sport that requires the mind as much as the body. Team USA won silver in the artistic Women's Team Final. However, Biles, the greatest gymnast of all time, was anything but good in her one vault attempt. “I have to put my pride aside,” she thought. While it would no doubt have been better for all if Biles had determined this prior to the start of competition, she said she felt good heading to the gym before trying to power through. However, there is a distinction in sports between just walking away and acknowledging when, for whatever reason, you are either incapable of continuing or your performance is hurting the team - like a player testing out a knee and realising he can’t go or the pulling of a hockey goalie who is letting in too many shots. After all, she decided to stop competing. There is no denying that Biles “quit" by some definitions of the word. While some have slammed Biles as a quitter who let her USA teammates down, there is a compelling argument that the gymnast's decision actually gave Team USA a chance to win the silver medal that they may not have otherwise. “Instead of being ashamed of that, or apologising to her teammates and her countrymen, Biles seemed to revel in taking care of her ‘mental health’, whatever that means.” She wasn’t mentally tough when she needed to be. “What she experienced wasn’t that, it was something more common among professional athletes: she got psyched out. She’s doing the absolute best she can given the situation she’s in.“Biles doesn’t suffer from a specific mental illness, at least not that we know of or that’s ever manifested itself before. “Whatever is going on cannot be grasped from outside. She’s on the Olympic team while you’re on Twitter,” Rousey, the former Olympic Judoka wrote. “Everyone judging doesn’t know their foot from their a-hole when it comes to being in her position. Former UFC champ and Olympic medalist Ronda Rousey, put critics on blast, while Manny Pacquiao also tweeted out a nice sentiment. It also makes their insane achievements even more impressive because they did all of that while dealing with these demons.įortunately, there are many other elite level athletes who voiced support for Biles, including some long term combat sports champions. While Bisping thinks that’s “pretty weak,” it actually takes much more strength to admit when you need help, and to take steps to take care of yourself.Similar to GSP, Biles also had a hiatus from the sport before going back to become champion again. This has not only led to him hating fighting, but it also factored in his decision to leave MMA altogether. Bisping should know this, as the man who put him to sleep in Georges St-Pierre has repeatedly shared how he struggled with crippling anxiety. Being “the GOAT” doesn’t mean you’re immune to mental health issues. She’s the best to ever do it, and doesn’t even need to prove herself to anyone, but at the same time… It remains to be seen if she can return next week, but either way, her legacy has already been cemented. Despite being compromised and clearly not being her normal self, she still was the only athlete to qualify for all individual finals. “Quitters never win” – She’s a 31-time medalist in the Olympics and world championships. This is also the very reason why they have alternates. Instead of dragging them all down to try and just “finish” for herself, she put her team’s needs first and they were still able to secure a podium finish. Biles was aware and humble enough to know and accept that her other teammate could do better. “Finish the race!” “Other people would of (sic) killed for that spot.” – She actually helped her team by not being that selfish superstar. She’s already been upfront to the entire world about some of the things she’s dealing with, but the reality is, she doesn’t owe us any explanations. Attributing it to just “not having a good day” is also pretty ignorant, and frankly, those specifics should be left to Biles and her team. “Folding to pressure in a sports environment though is not a mental health issue.” “Throwing in the towel as she wasn’t having a perfect performance…” – Like what some fans tried to tell Bisping, we do not know any specifics, so it’s wrong and unfair to make these types of conclusions. There’s certainly a lot issues with Bisping’s statements, but here’s a few points on the matter: ![]()
